Mommy, What Time is It?
Children's Book Illustrations
Illustrations By Alastair Carthew
Illustrating a children's book—or even writing one—is a long-held dream. On this occasion, I was invited, out of the blue, to illustrate an American children's book called Mommy, What Time is It?" as part of publisher Sharon Brandon's Rump-a-Doodle series of children's books.
Each part of a child’s day, from waking up, breakfast, going to school, learning and playing at school, eating dinner and going to bed, needed to be illustrated with the same little boy. I decided to make him as colourful as possible to appeal to a child’s eye.
These illustrations, along with the ones I have done in another gallery (Cape Sienna Pictures), are a different discipline from caricatures or sketches. They require telling a whole story in one or a few frames, so the viewer understands at a glance.
I still plan to do a children’s book, both text and pictures, possibly about my two cats, Milly and Maisy, who are rascals; or, about a boy who wants to grow up to be a bookseller. Who knows?
